How to Improve Writing Skills in Civil Services Examination
Such a coveted and competitive examination like Civil Services demands a smart strategy along with hard work and perseverance in order to get an edge over a large number of competitors.
Writing is a skill and everyone can develop this skill.
If you don’t possess great writing skills now, it does not mean that you can’t develop them now.
- No one is born a great writer.
- We become a writer by developing the writing skill.
You must understand that the Civil Services (Mains) paper is almost entirely subjective and hence writing skill plays an extremely important role in fetching good marks.
Let me provide you some tips for developing writing skills.
Speak, Learn and Think in English
Writing is deeply connected with thinking. Clear thinking leads to clear writing. If you think in Hindi and then translate that into English, you can never write great answers. Develop the habit of thinking and speaking in English.
Speak in English whenever possible and discuss current affairs and other topics in English with your friends.
Write every day
Writing is a skill and you can’t develop it in one day. You must develop the habit of writing answers every single day. Devote at least half an hour of time every day to write something relevant to your subject. That shall help your write better answers in the examination.
Read, revise and try to write every day, compare with toppers answers (how they write), add different aspects in limited words and time. Remember that knowledge must before writing without knowledge about that particular topic we can't satisfy our answer quantity and quality will come after practicing in a proper way. Be ready for changes whichever gives you good stuff and marks.
One of the most effective hacks of cracking the Mains Exam is to practice writing answers. I say this with my own experience and insist on you trying out the same.
Practicing answer writing has 2 benefits –
- Helps you with remembering concepts in the exam.
- Helps you with Time management
An aspirant should develop the craft of writing good and concise answers so that the examiner understands them clearly. Crisp and ‘to the point answers will make sure that you get awarded with the appropriate marks.
Can one clear the Civil Services with poor writing skills?
However, there are many aspirants who get evicted from the race just because of poor writing skills. However, serious grammatical mistakes can mar your chances of making it to the final list.
What you should keep in mind before writing an answer.
- Your answers should be clear, concise, and not beat around the bush.
- Use facts where necessary coupled with your opinions. Try to keep a balance between them.
- Use bullet points or diagrams where you feel the need.
- Do not use unnecessary jargon, simple English with simple words would serve the purpose well.
