HCS Mains 2004 English Literature 

Time: 3 Hours              Maximum Marks:150 

Note : Attempt Five questions in all. All questions carry equal marks. Q. No. l is compulsory. Answer two questions from Part I and two questions from Part II. The parts of the same question must be answered together and must not be interposed between answers to other questions.

1. Write critical notes on any four of the following. ( 4 X 7.5 =30) 

a) Donne’s use of metaphysical conceits in the poem “Canonization”

b) The theme of  colonialism in Shakespeare’s The tempest. 

c) The critique of Utilitarianism in Hard Times. 

d) Raja Rao’s KAnthapura as a sthalapurana.

e) The use of symbols in the poetry of Yeats with specific reference to “Byzantium” and the “gyre” 

f) Existential dilemmas in “ The journey of the Magi” and “The Love Song” of J Alfred Prufrock. 

PART-1

  2. Attempt a critical note of the central themes of Indian writing in English, Illustrate your answer with suitable examples.   (30)
